The jersey devil 1733 pine barrens, new jersey one of the most widely talked about "devils" is said to of been born in the 1700s, the jersey devil. The tail of the jersey devil has links to napolean and even one of the founding fathers but what is the truth behind the myth? A winged creature that is said to be stalking the pine barrens for the past 300 years. Is the creature in fact reality or a tale to scare us on the dark nights huddled around a blazing camp fire. Author jonathon Maberry creator of dead by night on a tv program stated in his own words whilst trying find a idea for a new horror story he went to the pine barrens at night and he went on to say the darkness and dread of the area not only terrified him but also inspired him. Back in 1735 there was a woman known as mrs leeds who had 12 children and during the birth of her 13th child cursed it saying may this one be a devil. Legend says the child was born healthy but moments after birth changed into a hooven creature with wings and a forked tail, the creature proceeded to kill the midwife then flew off into the woods where it is said to still lurk today. Joseph, the brother of napolean who lived in new jersey wrote of the creature on many occassions, tales of animal mutilations and cloven foot prints on roofs screamed a hysteria of the time. 1909 in a three week period there was hundreds of reported sightings of the creature, this even caused schools to close and people to even sell their homes and leave the state. The last reported sighting was in 2014. Was the creature real? or could it simply be a deformed baby, deformed babies back then were sadly simply forgotten or disposed of and there is occassional reports of humans born with tails, could the "devil" simply of been a child with a tail, simply a genetic throw back. Trouble with this theory i have seen on programs about the jersey devil there is no record of birth defects around that time and when you look there is no record of a woman named mrs deborah leeds, she didnt exist although the man alleged to be her father in law Daniel leeds. At the end of the 17th century daniel leeds began publishing a almunac. Only trouble was daniel leeds upset his religious town by jumping on the heliocentric band wagon, the belief that the earth went around the sun and not vice versa. The community began to call him the bringer of satan and satans harbinger. Daniel leeds had a son called Titan who took over the 17th centry version of a blog and added the family crest, a wyven a dragon like creature that closely matches descriptions of the jersey devil and a very anti religious symbol even one of the founding fathers a good friend to the leeds family turned his back on them, even to the point that the friend none other than Benjamin Franklyn began to slander the leeds family in his own books. In the first edition of his almana Franklyn started suggesting Titan Leeds was a practitioner of dark magic and that he even stood there after being risen from the grave. The jersey devil as with many paranormal events and cryptids of the past, it appears it simply a way of taking the light and interest from one individual to place firmly negativity to hinder accomplishment. The jersey devil it seems was far from real and was simply a slander that made one man very rich and another become a simple foot note in history and a great camp fire tale for those that dare go hunt the creature in the deep dark woods alone at night.
